Today we continued to run through the whole performance, we also had a showing to Nancy and worked on the ending of the performance loosely.
Run through:
The run through was purely to tighten up the show for when Nancy arrived at 8pm. In this run, no major changes were made at this point.
Nancy’s Notes:
We then showed to Nancy. Nancy’s main notes were that we should weave irony into the performance. At the time being, the show was very ‘lovey dovey’ to the audience, so much so that they would get bored of it after a while. She suggested that we undermine this ‘love’ by making it clear that we say it to every audience and that quite frankly, by this point, we had got bored of saying it.
She also said that Jodie should show off with her ballet skills more in Little boxes, and that Carmen should show off more with her singing in the spotlight of the Conveyor belt scene and in the rest of the piece. We have been trying to find more for Carmen to do, so this was useful.
Nancy also said that we should sing our theme song as the audience walk in, and also keep going at the end till they leave even getting them to sing along with us. The ending is still problematic for us, so I feel that perhaps singing the song at the end, bookmarking the performance would be effective.
After-Show Rehearsal:
After our meeting with Nancy we worked on the ending some more, trying to contextualise it a bit more and also thinking about how we could link in everyone singing the end section too. The ending if proving very difficult indeed.
We also began to look at how we could undermine what we were saying about love in the piece.. I said as one example that Carmen’s text about her ‘personal feelings’ towards this particular audience could be undermined by the fact that she reads it off a sheet of paper. We tried to think of other ways of doing this sort of thing as we agreed that just saying what we already had with a lack of enthusiasm could be irritating after a while.
